About hip dysplasia*

A common health concern with dogs and Golden Retrievers is hip dysplasia. In short this is a problem in the hips characterized by developmentally dislocated joints, or joints not forming normally during growth. As dogs with hip dysplasia age, the complications of malformed hip joints can compound and lead to tragic and crippling pain and suffering for our furry friends. The causes of hip dysplasia are thought to be both hereditary and environmental. Things that can affect the environmental risks of developing hip dysplasia may include:

  • Neutering before the dog fully matures (doubles the risk of hip dysplasia)
  • Hip overexertion or ligament tearing in young dogs
  • The dog being overweight
  • Repetitive hip motion at a young age (e.g. going on jogs with puppies)

How we mitigate hip dysplasia

We believe that mitigating the environmental risks of hip dysplasia includes proper exercise, a clean, healthy and fun environment, and the proper nutrition; so that's how we take care of our dogs and puppies. And currently 60% of our breeding adults have been rated excellent for hips, and the rest are rated good. We think we may be doing something right. We only breed dogs who have passed their health clearances, we play with our dogs, they have very large runs and get plenty of exercise (non-repetitive for the puppies), we live in a clean and healthy environment, we feed them premium food, and we provide them with nutritional supplements. In fact, we double-up the moms on the nutritional supplements while the pups gestate, and continue with the increased dose while they are nursing. Several dog trainers have told us the the smartest and best looking Goldens that they have ever trained came from us. So we will continue using nutritional supplements. Why mess with a winning formula? The best nutritional supplement that we have found is NuVet Plus. Check out the info below. It's worked well for us.

*Wikipedia states that "the causes of hip dysplasia are considered heritable, but new research conclusively suggests that environment also plays a role. To what degree the causality is genetic and what portion environmental is a topic of current debate. Neutering a dog, especially before the dog has reached an age of full developmental maturity, has been proven to almost double the chance he or she will develop hip dysplasia versus intact dogs or dogs that were neutered after reaching adulthood.  Other environmental influences include overweight condition, injury at a young age, overexertion on the hip joint at a young age, ligament tear at a young age, repetitive motion on forming joint (i.e. jogging with puppy under the age of 1 year). As current studies progress, greater information may help provide procedures to effectively reduce the occurrence of this condition." The Golden Retriever is listed as #43 in rank for the breed with the highest percentage of dysplasia. From January 1974 to December 2016 148,597 Goldens have been evaluated. Of that number 4.5% have been rated excellent and 20% have been rated dysplastic. The numbers have improved within the past few years. Of the 10,707 Goldens evaluated that were born between 2011 and 2015, 8.5% were rated excellent and 14.4% have been rated dysplastic.
